mainly wet out there. it has been north of town. although up in smithburg, .2 of an inch of ice. fulton and howard county, about an eighth of an inch of ice. we had pockets with a little bit of build-up. generally, we did all right last night. let's start you with a radar loop going back the last -- excuse me, day planner. we're in the mid-30s right now. this is yesterday's day planner. we're in the mid-30s. we'll fast forward to this. this will be generally in the low 50s this afternoon. check out what's happening with the satellite and radar. as moisture has moved in. we've got rain that has moved in. a couple of pockets of freezing rain. the heavy stuff now in delaware. it is in new jersey. back behind it though, on live doppler 9000 hd, lighter showers are still with us. we're watching the back edge though as you get back out toward the blue ridge. a couple of pockets of freezing rain north with general light rain across the metro. i think this is going to last another hour or so. you look southwest, starting to break up down toward stafford,

culpepper, fredericksburg starting to get out of it. we're in much better shape. over in the weather computer, temperatures also tell the story. it is a cold morning. but generally not cold enough. hagerstown has been bouncing between 32 and 34. some icing up here. that's really the only area of concern as everybody else is holding generally in the mid to even upper 30s south. a warm-up today but more cold comes tonight. i'll have those details in a few minutes. monika has details on the wednesday morning commute. >> thank you, howard. >> i'm so happy to be the bearer of good news for once. the road conditions are pretty good. if you're heading out to work right now, you'll be ok. we'll take you first to an overall look at the beltway. no problems to report around town. we'll zoom into the northside of town. show what you it looks like live on the beltway at colesville road. this is what it looks like, wet road conditions all the way around from 95 to 270, let's head back out to the maps and zoom into 270 coming in from frederick, we spoke to maryland state police. they're dealing with wet road conditions, no icing spots to worry about this morning as you

the flights. yet we still found people stuck inside because of cancellations or delays. kathy grant is coming from boston going to west virginia for two family occasions, a niece's wedding and her mother's birthday. let me tell you, so far it has been quite a trip! >> us airways canceled my flight that was supposed to take off from boston tomorrow morning at 6:00. connect through here, d.c. to go to charleston, west virginia. so, i used the alternate route, took amtrak, spent all night on the train and just arrived here and hopefully my flight will take off. >> now, united, delta, american airlines, along the airlines that sped up cancellations and the easing of flight changes this time around. this is lessons learned from the past. the longer the rule they wait to cancel a flight, the more it actually costs the company so that's good news for travelers. of course, the rule always, it bears repeating. if you're coming out to the airport, if you have a flight headed anywhere from boston to new york to dallas fort worth,

hoping to avoid a repeat of last year in college park, maryland. >> that's where the celebration of a maryland win over their hated rival, duke, got way out of hand. surae chinn joins us live with more on how authorities are preparing for tonight's crowd. >> good morning, andrea and mike. yeah, all quiet now. you can be sure that it is not going to be the case here on the streets and here at the campus of the university of maryland. extra officers will be here on the streets in and around the campus here in anticipation of the duke versus maryland game. video from last year, the school does not want any repeat of the riots, fires, burning couches that broke out after the game. spilling to route one. half a dozen students were arrested then. you can hardly forget the video of officers in riot gear beating a student. others reported brutality and there was fallout and an internal investigation of the prince george's county police department so the university is

being proactive planning structured events so students can channel their aggression and excitement over playing the fifth-ranked team in the nation. >> the problem is when our celebrations go awry and they lead to consequences where people get hurt or property gets destroyed. and then in the aftermath, folks are held accountable and they wish, frankly, that they hadn't been a part of that. >> so, the tip-off is 9:00 tonight at the comcast center here at the campus. back to you guys. >> thank you, surae. of course, we'll keep an eye on that this morning. egypt's president has partially caved into public pressure. hosni mubarak announced last night he will not be seeking re- election later this year. >> what i indicated tonight to president mubarak, my belief an orderly transition must be meaningful, it must be peaceful and it must begin now.

>> this morning, egypt -- in egypt, the army is keeping its tanks at the square where the biggest protests have been taking place over the last week or so. protest organizers say they're not satisfied. they want president mubarak to step down right now and not in september as he's planning. >> well, it was a controversy that led to the threat of boycotts during the busy holiday travel season. >> now, the tsa is debuting a new kind of body scanner that shouldn't be so invasive for passengers. >> plus, people in part of japan wonder how much they have to worry about a volcano that's rumbling back to life after hundreds of years of being dormant. coming up on 5:09 on this wet wednesday morning. even though we've had a little bit of ice, most is well north of washington up toward the slain border and in pennsylvania. we do have light to moderate showers still out there. the heavy rains from a few hours ago moved into delaware and new jersey actually. away from us. and out toward the blue ridge, starting to see the rain break up. looking at our day planner today, we've got temperatures which will get into the low 40s by 9:00. 50s for highs. >> we'll take a look heading into the district. via 395. no problems and no delays coming up from edsel road to this point at the 14th street bridge and into the district. in my next report, a closer look at virginia roads at 5:17. mike? >> thank you, monika. making news now, about 5:10, a vehicle laden with explosives blew up in a pakistan market this morning. >> the bombing killed at least

nine people and wounded 20 others in the city of peshawar. some of the victims are children. authorities believe the attack's intended target was a nearby police station. this is the sixth attack of the year in this part of northwest pakistan. >> a volcano in southern japan erupted two more times today which makes six eruptions in the last week. before that, this volcano had been dormant for 300 years. today's eruptions included some volcanic lightning. several hundred people had been evacuated from villages near the base of the mountain. >> the tsa is replacing some of those body scanners that caused an uproar last fall over privacy issues. agency officials unveiled a new version of the scanner at national airport. it shows only a simple drawing of a human body instead of a detailed photographic image. expected to be warm today. howard has a cooldown coming up in the forecast. he'll tell you when and this morning at 5:22, donovan mcnabb tries out a different job.

in virginia schools in warren county are opening two hours late. in maryland, carroll county schools are also delayed two hours and schools in morgan county, west virginia, are also opening two hours late. >> federal workers, the office of personnel management is once again given the option to take an unscheduled leave or telework day. this means employees need to notify their supervisor of their intent to take that unscheduled leave or perform unscheduled telework as defined and permitted by their particular agency. >> gun-shy from last week, aren't they? >> put the fear in them. that's what. >> but there shouldn't be a problem if they do want to come into work. >> no, other than the washington traffic and some wet roads. the normal problems we're dealing with. had a little bit of icing north of town last night. thankfully, well north of town. i'm talking .2 of an inch up in smithsburg. western maryland, seem to get a quarter inch in spots. up in pennsylvania, they got it a lot worse. pennsylvania around 5:45, gobbler's knob. today is groundhog day.

we'll visit with joe out there. a friend of mine and chief meteorologist in johnstown, altoona. rain moving in during the overnight. with some ice here and there but for the most part, temperatures were just warm enough it was wet and not slick in many, many areas including here in town. some lighter showers now, we're dealing with. live live doppler 9000 hd, this stuff is light to occasionally moderate. out west, almost getting west of route 15, very little rain showing up anymore as this stuff is moving off to the northeast. in washington, light to moderate stuff. it is generally east of 95, east of the district over toward the bay. the showers really start to break up south and west of town. we'll take a couple of stops. show you the more moderate bans through annapolis and the eastern shore and st. michael's, shadyside back to upper marlboro. back to college park where surae chinn is this morning. light rain showers up and down 270 into frederick and gaithersburg and howard county, light stuff. as you head into loudoun

county, it really starts to get light. there will be some patchy drizzle as well. fairfax, eastern fairfax, light showers to some drizzle. and lighter showers out west. then you head down to fauquier, it is breaking up already. still some stuff from warton down toward bealton on 29. you get south from quantico into stafford, again, we're looking at a spotty nature as opposed to a steady nature of the rainfall. >> checking out the momslikeme.com, we're going to school today. we've got some spotty showers and drizzle. temperatures in the 30s but above freezing, with the sunrise at 7:13. and then for today, well, we're going to have a nice little warm-up. a brief one though. 9:00 in town. up north, you may only hold near 40 place like hagerstown. noontime temp with mostly cloudy skies. becoming mostly sunny later this afternoon. upper 40s. we shoot for half since below 50s in town. warmer south. it is 46 in tappahannock. 48 in richmond. holding on to the freezing point up in hagerstown.

look at the temperatures. they're above freezing. even by one degree, that's enough. but they're all above freezing. as we look in and around the region. reagan national with 36. a north wind at 5 miles per hour. by the way, this big storm, had a wind gust, lakefront airport in chicago to 67 miles per hour. blizzard conditions for sure. it is pulling into the midwest and the rains are leaving us. the next three days, today is going to be a mild afternoon after chilly, damp morning. potentially, 52. 20s tonight, 38 tomorrow. friday, 45 with some increasing clouds late. saturday some rain. 42. then maybe some late rain or snow showers on tuesday. back to 40. monika samtani is in at 5:17. >> good to give everybody good news about the road conditions. >> wet, no icing conditions to worry about close into town. you're good to go if you're heading out the door. we'll take you to an overall look at the beltway. when things are looking fine, let's zoom into 95 coming in

football players across the country. it is national signing day and 9 sports will be keeping tabs on a dozen coveted athletes from the area schools and which college programs they'll select. keep it here for that. >> redskins quarterback donovan mcnabb is working at the super bowl this week. as a correspondent for espn. meanwhile, redskins fans are waiting to see whether mcnabb will be back with the team this coming season after his benching late last year. tuesday was mcnabb's first public appearance since his demotion. he addressed the tension. >> there are a lot of things that had to be answered. you know, for all parties. i think at this particular time, it important for all parties to keep everything low. sign a contract to be with them for the next couple of years. i think the way of approaching them is to make sure this off- season, i spent a lot of time focusing on being a better quarterback than being ready for the 2011 season. >> the contract extension he signed last fall was for five years. but the team had several outs

which means it won't cost too much if mcnabb is cut or traded. >> the capitals are not doing well lately when they go to overtime. in fact, ten of the last 11 times have been in overtime, they lost. washington hosting montreal and the first game after the all- star break, it was the mike connection. early power play. green to ca nubile for the score. caps gave up their lead to brian who scored both of his team's goals in regulation and then the game ended up in a shoot-out. and guess who it was. again. handed the caps a 3-2 loss in overtime. wizards have their own streak they would like to end. washington trying to get their first road win of the year last night in new orleans. and it was no big easy for the wizards. despite getting a first quarter lead, washington trailed the rest of the game. losing 97-89, 25 road losses in a row. february 2nd, that's

we had some exceptions up north. smithsburg near the maryland/pennsylvania border. not far from camp david. linda in howard county, an eighth of an inch. there were some pockets well north of town. again, this has been mainly a rain event thankfully. let's show you what's happening for today. we're going to warm up briefly for today. we get into the warm sector, especially south. we'll poke up 51, maybe 52 mid afternoon. the cold starts coming back. we'll see it clearing skies after the noon hour. south and west, you may see it later on this morning. here comes the rain from earlier. it just came through. any frozen stuff was up north. bigger problem north of 70. that's probably why carroll county schools are delayed with the icing they had near the pennsylvania border. over to live doppler 9000 hd, we've been watching the back edge of the precipitation. on live doppler 9000 hd. come closer and closer toward the region. you can see now it is passing warrenton. it is getting almost to past

route 15, into fairfax and prince william counties. another half hour or hour or so, it will be getting toward the district. we'll see much better conditions. temperatures running in the mid- 30s in most spots with some light rain showers. that means wet roads. that causes enough problems around here, monika. >> still keep your speed limits down with the wet road conditions. after what we dealt with last week, i think we'll take it, don't you think? a green light. we'll take a look around the beltway this time around. an overall look. let's zoom into the southside of town into alexandria. take a live look at eisenhower avenue. it is nice and light between basically the wilson bridge, alexandria, springfield and the american legion bridge. we'll head back out to the maps and show you what it looks like on the north and west sides of town and a live look at river road on the west side crossing the american legion bridge, it is the volume you see right now. no delays, no worries as you head up toward 270 and across the northside of town between 270 and 95, the main thoroughfares from the north look good as well.

if you're traveling by train this morning, metro vre and marc are all running on time. good news. in my next report, we'll take a look at virginia roads. >> thank you, monika. >> we're pretty much in the clear weatherwise this morning, thankfully. most people across the country aren't so lucky. >> this may look familiar to those of who you got thunder snow a week ago. snow and lightning hit the ground last night in chicago. the lightning flashes illuminated the falling, blowing snow around the windy city. we're expecting close to two feet of snow. >> staying in chicago, the snow was too much to handle for crews at o'hare and midway airport. o'hare, one of the nation's busiest airports with lots of connecting flights, except few if any flights will make it out today. midway is hoping to resume limited operations sometime this afternoon. >> the conditions were not nearly as bad at baltimore washington international. passengers still needed patient because of the mounting snowstorm across the nation,

the ripple effect is leading to cancellations to travelers out of baltimore. 9news now reporter jessica doyle is also watching those delays and cancellations pile up at reagan national this morning. jess, good morning. >> good morning, guys. if you look over my shoulder, you'll see a little light rain falling. you know the reason there are cancellations here this morning. not because of the washington area but because of other parts of the country. the board inside has over 40 cancellations on it. we caught up with kathy grant who is going to west virginia from boston for a couple of family occasions, they have had a tough time in boston so far this winter. her flight from boston to reagan national was canceled so kathy got creative. >> we have a lot of snow. my sidewalk is up to my waist. i used the alternate route, took amtrak, spent all night on the train and just arrived here and hopefully my flight will take off. >> now, her flight does look like it is on time. fingers crossed for kathy she gets out. 6200 flights at last check

across the country have been canceled because of the storms. and some of the major airlines were fast to get ahead of this. some of the ones that canceled early, delta, united, american airlines, all sped up their cancellations and their change policies. a lot of airlines will allow you to change your ticket without penalty this time around. lessons learned from many past storms where they lost a ton of money by not getting ahead of the storms, canceling ahead of time. so they didn't have to deal with stranded passengers across the country. we want to tell folks the rule is always the same. if you're headed up to reagan international airport, just because it is good outside doesn't mean you're not going to have problems. be sure to check with the airlines before you come out today. guys, i'm going to send it back to you in the studio. >> other news this morning, police at the university of maryland are trying to prevent a storm of controversy for the second year in a row. >> when maryland beat duke last year, student celebrations got out of hand and then video from the scene showed police beating

unarmed students. 9news now reporter surae chinn joins us live with more from college park where they're hoping to have some different results. good morning. >> well, good morning. yes, there will be extra officers, you can bet on that. campus police, prince george's county police will be in and around the campus during and after the game. also, 100 volunteer students will be here walking the campus to make sure things don't get out of hand. there was a prayer service last night where there was prince george's county police there, campus police, students gathered to really set the tone of tonight's game. against duke versus maryland. the school does not want a repeat of last year. riots, fires, burning couches broke out after the game spilling ton route one. students filling the streets. police unleashed pepper spray, rubber bullets, mounted police tried to get a handle on the chaos. things got quite out of hand. officers in riot gear were seen

beating a student and others reported brutality so the university is being proactive this time around. planning structured events. 100 seats will be reserved for student leaders, a post-game bonfire will be set on the chapel field so students can channel their aggression and excitement over paying the fifth ranked team in the country. >> i have a lot of faith in the officers that will be protecting and serving as they do each and every day, not only with the university of maryland police department but the prince george's county police department, the maryland park police who will be with us tomorrow night are fire marshals and other public safety officers. >> now, remember duke beat maryland a few weeks ago. in fact, maryland has lost some really close games against some really good top-ranked teams, villanova, pittsburgh, duke, illinois and so you know students are going to be raring to go. tip-off is at 9:00 p.m. tonight at the comcast center

on campus. back to you. >> thank you, surae. >> she's live in college park this morning. >> some pepco customers have lost their power again. but this time, it is not weather-related. pepco spokesperson clay anderson tells 9news, the crews are trying to deal with a malfunctioning feeder line causing power flux situations to about 3,000 customers in central silver spring and takoma park this morning. it is the second feed issue though pepco has had overnight. another feeder trip late last night briefly cutting the power to 11,000 customers. after last week's low restoration and last summer's power problems, pepco may see some new laws to force a faster response. >> we've been talking about these things for the last two or three years, the fact of the matter is pepco's lines are older than other utilities. they go dark more than other utilities and therefore, pepco needs to do a better job than any other utility in order to get the crews out there and get them out there in a more timely fashion.

>> lawmakers in annapolis are now considering a bill which would penalize pepco financially. if approved, the law would require utility companies in maryland to give their customers rebates when it takes more than 24 hours to restore power. fixing a pesky problem. there is a summit underway in washington to deal with that. >> plus, the "national geographic" museum displays a new exhibit on the impact african americans have had on this country. 5:37. you're watching 9news now.

virginia first... had a little ice this morning. had to report .2, quarter inch in spots. those counties well to the north and northwest had some delays this morning. for the rest of us, we've been just above freezing. it is a good place to be when we're talking about rain. don't want to be just below it. let's start with a look at what's been going on. radar showed all of the moisture moving in. we expected the second wave to come in overnight. freezing rain advisory still up to the north. you see how quickly the heavy rains have moved away now along the jersey coast. behind it, another little wave giving us lighter rain showers. we're picking that up on live doppler 9000 hd. we can show you the back edge coming toward warton on 66 here as you head into fauquier county. into loudoun county, we're

pretty much done with it. to the east, we've got spotty showers. it was almost like a drizzle more so than a light rain. a little bit heavier showers from queenstown toward easton. this stuff is moving quickly. showers in davidsonville and upper marlboro. montgomery and howard county, light showers or drizzle. from great falls, reston, vienna down toward eastern fairfax county, we've got a few steadier showers and again to the west, warrenton, some sprinkles, some drizzle out there. you go south out of woodbridge, things start to break up down 95. this is the last part of the rain. school will be in session on this groundhog day. your momslikeme.com bus stop forecast, we've got cloudy skies, some spotty showers or drizzle is all we'll see. we start in the 30s. sunrise, 7:13. north of town, you may stay in the low to mid-40s today. 42 or so by 9:00.
